Handmade car accesories FREE knitting Pattern

Below are how I made a couple of accessories I knitted for my car.

Simple cup holder coaster.

Knitted Car buckets for storage.

Cup holder storage.

These are useful to keep the bottom of car cup holders clean from spills and dust and take under 10 minutes to make.

Please note, the following directions are a recipe rather than a pattern so feel free to subsititute the yarn and needles I have used to better fit what you have to hand. The dimensions of the finished coaster is 7.5cm.

Tools

  • Yarn. I used some leftover chunky roving wool called “Woolpower – Happy Sheep” 100% wool so my directions and sizing will be appropriate for the gauge I achieved with this wool. You can whatever yarn you have, but you may have to adjust stitch counts.
  • (A note about the yarn I used: I don’t really endorse the yarn I used here: While it’s affordable, and when knit up, is pretty robust: see here when I used it to knit up a decoy wasp’s nest for the garden which has been outside in all weathers for about a year and is still going strong! However, the yarn is an absolute nightmare to knit with as it breaks often! I bought quite a few balls a few years back. I have sold most of it now, so I am using the last of the scraps in home projects.
  • 5mm circular needles.
  • Tapesty needle to weave in ends.

Directions

  • Cast on 28 stitches.
  • Join in the round being careful not to twist your stitches.
  • Place your Beginning of round marker at the start of the round.
  • Round 1 – Knit all stitches.
  • Round 2 – Knit all stitches.
  • Round 3 – K2tog to the end of the round.
  • Round 4 – K2tog to the end of the round.
  • Round 5 -Break yarn leaving a small tail and thread a tapestry needle with the remaining tail and thread that through the stitches remaining on your knitting needle. Pull the tail tight closing the hole in the centre of the work and thread the tail through to the back of the work.
  • Weave in the ends.
  • Wash, block and press flat to dry. I did this by pinning the coasters between two blocking mats. You may not need to flatten the coaster if you use thinner yarn.

Knitted Buckets.

Tools

  • Chunky Yarn – I used 1.5 balls of 100g wool ‘The Wool’ by We Are Knitters (ran out of yarn so had to use “Woolpower – Happy Sheep” to finish the larger basket. So to make one large and one medium basket you need about 200g of chunky yarn.
  • 9mm circular needle.
  • Tapestry needle.

Medium Dimensions 22cm circumference x 20cm (Large 35cm x 13cm, great for containing things in the back seat foot beds.)

Directions

  • CO 40 (60) stitches.
  • Join in the round being careful not to twist your stitches.
  • Place your Beginning of round marker at the start of the round.
  • Knit 26 (17) rounds of stockinette stitch.
  • Next round, K2tog to the end of the round.
  • Next round K2tog to the end of the round.
  • Continue rounds until you are left with 6 stitches on your needle.
  • Break yarn leaving a small tail and thread a tapestry needle with the remaining tail and thread that through the stitches remaining on your knitting needle. Pull the tail tight closing the hole in the centre of the work and thread the tail through to the back of the work.
  • Weave in the ends and secure.
  • If you want straps or a draw string, weave some thick yarn (not unspun or roving) through the cast on edge at the top of the basket.
