I recently found a potter called Shannon who runs The Crafting Chicken, a pottery shop and studio where she sells her handmade ceramics and offers affordable 1:1 and 2:1 wheel throwing classes.
This has always been something I have wanted to learn so I booked myself a day off work for “personal development” and booked myself in (- she has a handy online calendar booking system).
The class
The class lasted two hours. It started with a wheel-throwing demo, introducing me to basic throwing techniques: centring, coning up, coning down and various shaping methods. We used a lever operated pottery wheel mounted between our legs and adjusted the speed manually, dependant on the technique being use: full pelt for coning and general shaping, slower for more delicate techniques.
Pottery wheel throwing is a lot more physically demanding then I would have thought. Luckily I have strong arms and hands!
My Makes
I made a deep pot, a shallow pot and a mug. I picked out my glaze which will be trimmed, kiln fired and glazed by Shannon and ready to be picked up in a few weeks!
