Should I Add Worms to the Compost Heap?

In our current house, I only started the compost heap about a year ago but it’s coming along. Nothing usable just yet, but it’s breaking down nicely with a combination of green and brown organic matter from the house and garden.

Worms tend to find their way to the compost if it is open-bottomed heap so it is not normally necessary.

I decided to add Dendobaena worms to the compost. We sited our compost bin on a patio slab so IT may be difficult for worms to access. Worms shed their casts and aerate the compost, both things are excellent for soil health.

We turned the heap a few weeks ago and felt compost had started to form so we gave it another turn before placing the worms on top.

Learning Tip:

I think another thing we can do is ensure that what we add to the compost heap is broken down as small as possible. At times, we’re in a rush and not that intentionally about adding our organic waste and forget to chop stuff up- logically, the smaller the components are, the quicker things will break down into usable compost!
