Creating Recreational Outdoor Spaces

Time to read 2 minutes

Recreation is pretty important in our home.

My husband and I love competitive games and we had a few dead zones on our property which was not suitable for planting in, which would be my first choice but we managed to create a few additional areas where we can play games and relax in the sun.

The front patio.

A photo of an adult boxer dog sitting outside on a green patio sofa. Next to him is a white male with sunglasses and wearing blue crocs. He sits across the table from the photographer who is knitting. On the table in the middle, a game of scrabble is in progress.

With the addition of a bistro set, we regularly use this area to play board games. I also can sit and knit well into the evening here as it is the area that gets the most sun.

The enclosed bar area and darts.

Our house came with an enclosed bar – not really something I would have added, but we have it.

With the addition of a darts board weirdly makes this space usable and gets a lot of use when friends and family visit as well.

And the knife throwing area

It’s certainly an unconventional choice but everything here was cobbled together or obtained second hand – materials given to us by neighbours- like the target board or bought off Facebook marketplace – paving slabs.

We only bought the scoreboard and knives new. It has really made a difference to how we use the outside space.

My husband and I have loved knife throwing for a few years now.

We had this dead zone in our garden that was too dark to use for plants, so we turned it into a throwing area which gets used all year round by us, our visitors and neighbours. It’s a great way to let off steam.

We block off the path when we throw to keep our animals safe. They tend to watch us from the window in the bar. Safety first always.
